The Future of Manufacturing

Quality in manufacturing is the foundation of operational excellence, customer satisfaction and long-term profitability. But according to the 10th Annual State of Smart Manufacturing report, manufacturers across the globe are struggling to balance quality and profitable growth.

As manufacturers navigate a complex and changing landscape, being able to ensure repeatability, predictability and compliance management has become nearly impossible with manual processes and homegrown systems. With costly rework, safety and brand reputation all at stake, more and more manufacturers are turning to quality management system (QMS) software solutions to tackle quality in their businesses. But what does this look like?

The 10th Annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report by Rockwell Automation offers a comprehensive look into how manufacturers are harnessing the latest in manufacturing technology to enhance quality, resilience and competitiveness. Based on insights from over 1,500 manufacturers across 17 countries, here are some key takeaways from the latest research about quality in manufacturing:

1. AI and Machine Learning Are Central to Quality Enhancement

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have transitioned from experimental tools to essential components in manufacturing quality management. The report reveals that 50% of manufacturers plan to apply AI/ML to support product quality in 2025, making it the top AI use case for the second consecutive year. These technologies are instrumental in detecting defects, predicting maintenance needs, and ensuring consistent product standards.

2. Digital Transformation Is Accelerating Quality Management

A significant 81% of manufacturers indicate that both external and internal pressures are accelerating digital transformation initiatives. Investments are primarily directed toward cloud/SaaS solutions, AI, cybersecurity and quality management systems. This shift enables real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making and enhanced traceability, all of which are crucial for maintaining and improving quality standards.

3. Workforce Upskilling Is Essential for Sustaining Quality Improvements

As manufacturing becomes increasingly digital, the need for a skilled workforce to manage and interpret new technologies is paramount. The report notes that 48% of manufacturers plan to repurpose or hire additional workers due to smart manufacturing investments, and 41% are using AI and automation to help close the skills gap. Upskilling employees ensures that quality improvements are not only implemented but also sustained over time.

Conclusion: The integration of AI and ML, accelerated digital transformation and workforce upskilling are collectively redefining quality in manufacturing. Manufacturers that embrace these trends are better positioned to enhance product quality, increase operational efficiency and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.
